Da stasera e per tre date (24 novembre @DRUSO – Ranica (BG) – 25 novembre @BEAT CAFE’ – San Salvo (CH) -26 novembre @OFF CLUB c/o Complesso Palapartenope – Napoli) avrete modo di ascoltare dal vivo il nuovo progetto nato dalla collaborazione di “Snah” Hans Magnus Ryan, fondatore e chitarrista dei celebri MOTORPSYCHO, e BOL, trio Norvegese. Il loro album “So?Now?” è uscito il 14 ottobre ed è un concentrato di jazz, elettronica e noise, con qualche passaggio psichedelico.
Ho avuto il grande onore di poterli intervistare.

Snah, sappiamo bene che tu sei parte fondamentale dei Motorpsycho, cosa ti ha spinto a lanciarti in questa nuova avventura?
I Motorpsycho sono sempre stati e saranno (si spera) per sempre la mia band principale. Allo stesso tempo penso però che sia divertente evolvere, imparare nuove canzoni e improvvisare sotto una diversa atmosfera rispetto a quella dei Motorpsycho. Ho trovato suonare con BOL fondamentalmente come un’ispirazione e una sfida. Tutto viene fuori dal bisogno d’imparare nuova musica e di tenere le mie abilità al caldo in mezzo al classico ciclo studio-tour-scrittura coi Motorpsycho.
Snah, we are well aware of the fact that you are part of the project Motorpsycho. What made you decide to get involved in a new adventure?
Snah: Motorpsycho has always been and will always be (hopefully) my main band .At the same time I think it is fun to push the envelope and learn new songs and improvise under a different temperature than the usual Motorpsychedelic settings.I find it ultimately inspiring and challenging to play with BOL . It all comes down to the need to learn new music and keep my chops warm in between the usual studio-tour-writing cycle with Motorpsycho.
Ricordi la prima volta che hai incontrato i Bol?
Snah: Ricordo che incontrai il batterista Tor Haugerud intorno al 2004 durante una partita di football dove sia mio figlio che il suo stavano giocando. Parlammo un sacco e ci rendemmo conto di avere un sacco di interessi comuni. Più o meno nello stesso periodo ascoltai un live recording di un intero show di BOL sulla radio nazionale. Pensai che fosse diverso, strano e intrigante. Fu molto facile dire sì quando mi chiesero di unirmi a loro per il Trondheim Jazzfest nel lontano 2010.
Do you remember the first time you met Bol?
Snah: I remember I met the drummer Tor Haugerud around year 2004 at a football match where both his and my kid were playing. We talked a lot and found out we had lots of common interests. Around the same time I heard a live recording of an entire BOL show broadcast on the national radio. I thought it was different, strange and intriguing. It was easy to say yes when they asked me to join them for the Trondheim Jazzfest back in 2010.
“So?Now?” è il Vostro primo album insieme.
Tone: Sì, il primo album nella formazione in Quattro – l’ultimo album era con BOL, Snah, con la partecipazione del chitarrista norvegese Stian Westerhus. (2012).

Tone: Yes, the first album as the four of us- the last album was with BOL, Snah and in addition the norwegian guitarist Stian Westerhus. (2012)
Il Titolo ispira una sensazione di dubbio, come se qualcuno si chiedesse cosa fare del suo futuro. Qual é il concept dell’album?
Tone: I testi sono sempre il mio punto di partenza quando scrivo musica. I poemi di Rolf Jacobsen creano molto spesso – o almeno, secondo me – un senso di connessione tra le piccole cose che riempiono la nostra vita quotidiana e le grandi prospettive nella vita di ognuno di noi. A volte sono visioni confortanti e visionarie, altre volte, invece, sembrano fare domande scomode. Tramite questo, i suoi testi sono molto dinamici e in un certo qual modo si “estendono”, e così fa anche la band. Con questi musicisti le canzoni possono variare e contenere parti molto basse e minimaliste, descrivere grandi panorami simbolici o mutare in pura energia aggressiva. I testi di Jacobsen ispirano a loro volta molti dei miei testi, come ad esempio il titolo dell’album, “So?Now?”. Non sono un grande fan dell’interpretazione dei testi e mi fa piacere che il titolo “ispiri una sensazione”, perché è esattamente ciò che le parole fanno a me quando decido di comporre musica – è una sensazione piuttosto che un preciso significato.
The title inspires a sensation of wondering, as when someone thinks about what he has to do about his future. What is the concept of the album?
Tone: The lyrics are always my point of departure when I make songs. The poems of Rolf Jacobsen very often create – for me- a sense of connection between the little things that fills our daily life and the big perspectives in everyone’s life. Sometimes they are comforting and visionare, sometimes they are asking uncomfortable questions. Through this, he texts have this great dynamic stretch in a way, and so does indeed this band. With these musicians the songs can move from the really low and minimalistic parts to the big symphonic landscapes and also into aggressive, harsh energy. Jacobsen’s lyrics also inspire my own song lyrics, like the title of the album, “So? Now? “. I am not a fan of explaining texts, and I am glad you say that the title inspires a sensation, because that is also what words do to me when I decide to make music- it’s a sensation more than a specific meaning.
Com’è nata l’idea di fare un album insieme?
Tone: Dopo aver rilasciato “Numb, number” nel 2012 (con BOL, Snah e Stian Westerhus, come è stato precedentemente menzionato), abbiamo iniziato a fare un tour insieme sotto lo pseudonimo di BOL&SNAH, proprio mentre iniziavo a comporre nuove canzoni per questo gruppo. Ci siamo mossi musicalmente, cercando di dare più struttura e in un certo modo ad avvicinarci al mondo del progrock. Quindi dopo qualche tempo non c’erano più domande, sapevamo che avremmo dovuto registrare questo nuovo materiale…
How did you decide to make an album together?
Tone: After releasing “Numb, number” in 2012 (with BOL, Snah and Stian Westerhus as mentioned”), we started touring together as BOL&SNAH , and I started to make new songs for this group. We moved on musically, towards a little more structure and somewhat getting closer to the world of progrock. So, after a while there was no question about it actually, we knew we had to record this new music….
Jazz, elettronica e noise. In che modo questi elementi convivono nel vostro lavoro?
Tone: Penso che la parte jazz abbia parzialmente a che fare con il nostro background da improvvisatori. BOL proviene da una tradizione di jazz moderno e anche da un genere non-etichettabile di musica di tipo libero, che dà un senso di apertura verso il confronto musicale e così via. Hans Magnus viene da un background rock , ma si rivela comunque un musicista aperto verso ogni genere musicale ed è intuitivo e versatile in ogni tipo di improvvisazione. Tutti noi siamo cresciuti con influenze musicali che spaziano tra il rock e il progrock degli anni ’70, assieme a molta altra musica che ha contribuito a sviluppare la nostra espressione.
Questa espressione cresce a seconda del modo in cui lavoriamo insieme alla nostra musica, sviluppando le canzoni insieme. Inoltre, ognuno dei musicisti condivide una parte nel suono.
Snah, Ståle e Tone lavorano sugli effetti elettronici come parte naturale della loro esecuzione , Tor invece lavora con la sua batteria non solo per dare l’assetto e il groove, ma anche per descrivere le varie sfumature del suono. Con questo come premessa, ovvero una totale apertura nonché l’interesse verso il suono, integrare noise ed effetti elettronici nella nostra musica ci viene naturale. È una parte del suono complessivo della band, ed è anche parte del materiale con cui improvvisiamo. Il suono è la musica.
Jazz, electro music and noise. In which way does these elements live together in your work?
Tone : I think the “Jazz “- part mostly has to do with our background as improvisers. BOL comes from a tradition of modern jazz and also a more non-idiomatic/genre-open kind of music that gives a great openness towards the musical interplay as such. Hans Magnus has a background from rock, but is still a musician which is wide open towards every musical genre and goes intuitively into all kinds of improvisation. And all of us grew up with musical influences from the rock and progrock from the 70’s, among with a lot of other great music that has contributed to our expression. This expression grows out of the way we work collectively with our music, developing the songs together. In addition, each and one of the musicians share an interest in sound as such. Snah, Ståle and Tone work with electronic effects as a natural part of their performing, Tor always woks with his drums not only as a groove- setup, but also as a palette of sounds. With this as a starting point, the openness for -and interest in- sound, electronics and noise as elements in our music comes very naturally. It is a part of the total sound of the band, but it is also a part of the material we improvise with. Sound is music.
Sarete in Italia dal 24 novembre, cosa devono aspettarsi i fan dal vostro live?
Non vediamo l’ora di tornare di nuovo in Italia, è sempre fantastico essere lì. Sicuramente faremo le tracce estratte dell’album, inoltre porteremo del nuovo materiale che verrà eseguito in anteprima in questo tour e siamo davvero contenti di questo. Stale porterà il suo nuovo Hammond digitale- un organ clone che ha un suono meraviglioso – che non aveva portato l’ultima volta in Italia. Sarà fantastico!
You will be in Italy from the 24th of November, what should your fans expect from your live?
We really, really look forward to come back to Italy, it’s always great to be there. We will of course play the songs from the album, and we will also bring some new material which will be premiered on this tour, that we are very happy about. And Ståle is bringing his new digital Hammond -organ clone which sounds awsome, -which we didn’t have last time in Italy. It will be just great!
