Check My Spleen è il nuovo disco dei Fabiola, band capitanata da Fab Detry. Un album composto da 10 brani, 10 racconti, ognuno con un tema diverso: si passa da dediche d’amore a testi più impegnati nei quali non mancano citazioni letterarie e cinematografiche.
Un disco dedicato alla milza…come ha preso forma?
Questo album è un viaggio di tre anni. Avevo questa band, gli Austin Lace, molto tempo fa, e stavo cercando di trovare nuovi modi di fare finalmente musica che fosse vicina al mio io interiore. Volevo trovare un equilibrio tra la leggerezza della mia voce, l’attitudine pop del songwriting e la mia personalità lunatica. Avevo bisogno di un orizzonte dietro il quale poter dare una seconda interpretazione ai brani. Un album è anche qualcosa che riguarda le giuste collaborazioni. Non si può realizzare tutto da soli. Dopo alcune line-up sbagliate, finalmente ho trovato Aurélien Auchain per produrre questo disco nel modo che volevo. Ha semplificato le canzoni e mi ha spinto a concentrarmi sugli elementi essenziali della musica. E la band che ho adesso è quella che ho cercato per più di 15 anni: amici attenti che hanno mostrato rispetto per le demo e che si sono sentiti a proprio agio nel dirmi se stessi sbagliando o perdendo il mio tempo.
Poi uno strano evento è accaduto e ha dato il nome a questo album. Questa storia è del tutto folle. Durante le registrazioni, mi sono ammalato, perdendo molto peso e sentendomi veramente male. Una notte avevo un tale mal di pancia che sono stato portato al pronto soccorso. Lì hanno scoperto che la mia milza era tre volte la dimensione normale, a causa di una leucemia mieloide cronica. Mi sono sentito condannato. Ma, fortunatamente, questo cancro è ora molto più curabile rispetto a dieci anni fa e il trattamento sta procedendo bene. Ad ogni modo, ho deciso di dedicare il mio album alla mia milza, perché è stato l’organo che ha dato l’allarme e stavo combattendo ancora la malinconia che avevo. E sai qual è la cosa più pazzesca? Ho realizzato che quest’organo è strettamente collegato allo “spleen” Baudelairiano, perché gli antichi Greci associavano la bile nera, secreta dalla milza, con la malinconia. Tutto ciò ha assunto un senso.
L’ultimo singolo è “My Bird” ed è ispirato dal libro “Misteri” del premio Nobel Knut Hamsun. Cosa ti ha colpito del romanzo?
È uno dei miei preferiti, perché traduce una sensazione assai profonda che provo: il non essere capace o il non volere mostrare il mio vero essere/ciò che davvero sono alla società che mi circonda. Ed è divertente, perché il protagonista nel libro agisce come se fosse un potenziale pericolo per qualcuno ma noi, i lettori, comprendiamo che lui potrebbe essere in cerca del vero amore nonostante tutto. Non è straziante?
Se dovessi paragonare questo album a un quadro, quale sceglieresti?
Direi: The Castle of the Pyrenees (Il castello dei Pirenei) di Rene Magritte.
Come sta andando il tour? Il pubblico come ha accolto le tue nuove canzoni?
Molto bene. Tutto per noi sta appena cominciando, eppure sentiamo di avere una grande connessione col pubblico. Sento di avere la giusta band per questo scopo (Aurelie Muller, Antoine « Monolithe Noir » Pasqualini and Lucie Rezsohazy). Abbiamo aperto i Girls in Hawaii a Evreux, vicino Parigi, davanti ad 800 persone, e ci siamo divertiti molto. Il release party al Botanique di Bruxelles è stato un grande successo, così come i concerti a Gent ( abbiamo suonato con una band di ragazzi Thailandesi, molto divertente). Adesso abbiamo di fronte il vero tour, che ci porterà ovunque in Belgio, ma anche in Francia a Marzo e… in Italia, ovviamente. Saremo lì tra il 19 Febbraio e il 1° Marzo. “Let’s meet the raggaza and raggazo !” Prometto di imparare meglio l’Italiano !!!
Domanda Nonsense: se fossi costretto a vivere in un supermercato per una settimana, quale reparto sceglieresti come camera da letto?
Ok, diciamo che sono un rocker. La prima notte dormirei nel reparto liquori, facendo la più grande festa di sempre coi miei amici, ma durante la notte saremmo veramente affamati, quindi ci sposteremmo al reparto macelleria per fare un barbecue improvvisato con vino e cibo dal negozio. Nei giorni e nelle notti successive, staremmo chiusi presso il reparto frutta e verdura il più possibile, circondati da centinaia di bottiglie d’acqua e frullati. Resterei così “pulito” per l’intera settimana, dormendo su materassi avvolti nella plastica nel reparto sonno, suonando chitarre giocattolo prese dal reparto giochi e leggendo economici giornali-spazzatura su stupide star cinematografiche e politici. E darei l’ultima festa durante l’ultima notte nel reparto liquori con gli stereo che avremmo rubato nel reparto elettrodomestici.

Check My Spleen is the new record of Fabiola, the band fronted by Fab Detry. An album composed by 10 songs, 10 tales, each of them with a different theme: you go from love dedications to more engagged lyrics where you can find quotes from literature and cinema.
A record dedicated to the spleen… How did it take shape?
This album is a three years journey. I had this band Austin Lace a long time ago, and I was trying to find new ways to finally make a music that was close to my innerself. I wanted to find a balance between the lightness of my voice, the « poppyness » of the songwriting and my moody self. I needed a landscape behind that’s could give a second interpretation of the songs. An album is also about the right collaborations. You don’t do this all by yourself. After several wrong line-ups, I finally found Aurélien Auchain to produce this record the way I wanted. He simplified the songs and forced me to concentrate on the essentiel elements of the music. And the band I have now is the one I had been looking for for more than 15 years : dedicated friends who had respect for the demos and who could also feel confortable with telling me I’m doing wrong or I’m losing my time.
Then a strange event happened and gave the name to this record. This whole thing is crazy. During the recording, I fell ill, losing a lot a weight and getting really bad. I had so much pain in my belly that one night, I was taken to the emergencies. They discovered my spleen was three times the normal size, due to a chronic myeloid leukemia. I felt like doomed. But fortunately, this cancer is now much more curable than ten years ago and the treatment is going well. But anyway, I decided to dedicate my album to my spleen, because it’s the organ that gave the alarm and I was fighting again the melancholy I had. And you know what crazy? I realized the organ is closely linked to the Baudelairian spleen, since the ancient Greeks associated the black bile, secreted by the spleen, with melancholy. This all made sense.
The last single is “My Bird” and it is inspired by the book “Mysteries” by the Nobel prize Knut Hamsun. What did impress you of that novel?
It’s one of my favourite, cause it translates a really deep feeling I have : not being able or not willing to show my true self to the society around. And it’s funny, because the character in the book acts as if he was a potential danger to somebody but we, the readers, get to know he might be in search of a true love after all. Isn’t it heartbreaking?
If you had to combine this record with a painting, which one would you choose?

How’s the tour going so far? How did the audience receive your new songs?
Really good. Things are only starting for us, but we feel we have a great connection with the audience. I feel i have the right band for that (Aurelie Muller, Antoine « Monolithe Noir » Pasqualini and Lucie Rezsohazy). We opened for Girls in Hawaii in Evreux, close to Paris, in front of 800 persons, and we had an amazing time. The release party in the Botanique in Brussels was a great success, where as the gigs in Ghent (we played with a Thai boyz band, really fun). We now have the real tour ahead, that will take us everywhere in Belgium, but also France in March and… Italy, of course. We’ll be there between Februari 19 and March 1. Let’s meet the raggaza and raggazo ! I promise I’ll learn more italian !!!!
“Nonsense question”: if you were forced to live in a supermarket for 1 week, which department would you choose as your bedroom?
Ok let’s say I’m a rocker. First night, I woud sleep in the boose department, having the biggest party ever with my friends, but during the night we would be really hungry so we’d move to the meat department to have an improvisated bbq with wine and food from the store. The next days and night, we’d stay as close to fruits and vegetables as possible, with hundred bottles of water and smoothies around. I’d stay clean like this the whole week, sleeping on matrasses wrapped in plastic in the « sleeping » department and playing toy guitars from the toy department, reading crap cheap mags above stupid movie stars and politicians. And I would have a last party on the last night in the booze department with stereos we would have stolen in the hifi department.
