Dopo aver concluso molti anni fa la sua esperienza nei Motorpsycho ed aver pubblicato album solisti o in collaborazione con altri musicisti, il musicista norvegese si concede a noi per una breve chiacchierata a proposito dell’uscita del suo ultimo pezzo, “That Day”…
Dove hai preso ispirazione per scrivere “That Day”?
“That Day” è stata scritta a Firenze lo scorso inverno. Io e Marì siamo andati in Italia per avere una pausa dal freddo norvegese. Stavo suonicchiando un riff di chitarra nel nostro appartamento, cercando di scrivere della musica, quando Marì si inventò: That day! Quello fu il giusto input con cui iniziare, prese vita ed il resto arrivò da sè, come spesso accade quando trovi il giusto punto di partenza.
So che pure Marì è coinvolta nella composizione, come organizzate il lavoro insieme?
Marì ha il dono di saper giocare con parole e testi. Questo non è mai stato il mio punto forte, io posso fare musica. Quindi, quando scriviamo del nuovo materiale, viene fuori suonando riff e semplici strutture di canzoni, Marì si arrangia con parole, frasi e rime. Quindi ad un certo punto si sente quando abbiamo il giusto titolo o tematica della canzone, il momento in cui la canzone prende la sua personalità in un modo. Da quel momento è più per noi un mettere insieme i pezzi di parole e musica in una canzone finita. Soprattutto, abbiamo tanto divertimento nel perderci nelle traduzioni! A casa parliamo un misto fra inglese, italo-norvegese e anche nel parlare di accordi musicali abbiamo il nostro sistema di notazione misto. E’ fantastico sapere che la nota G suona esattamente come un SOL*! Non si finisce mai di imparare 🙂

Qual è il significato della canzone?
E’ più un sentimento che un significato particolare. E’ riempita di associazioni e spunti di storie o avvenimenti che possono essere interpretati differentemente a seconda dell’ascoltatore. Non c’è una storia raccontata. Hai la sensazione che qualcosa stia accadendo, ma non possiamo dirti cosa… non ora almeno!
Quali sono i vostri piani futuri dopo questo pezzo? Avete intenzione di registrare un album?
Abbiamo in piano di pubblicare altri singoli ed ep nel prossimo futuro. Il prossimo singolo uscirà subito dopo Natale. Stiamo lavorando a vari pezzi al momento. “That Day” è stata una svolta per l’ispirazione, improvvisamente un nuovo scenario elettrico è venuto fuori da questa canzone, e credo che siamo entrambi curiosi di sapere dove ci porterà. Pubblicare singoli ed ep calza perfettamente il modo di lavorare che abbiamo in questo momento, quindi in futuro avremo una serie di canzoni differenti da cui poter pescare per un album. Che vorremmo davvero stampare in vinile.
State organizzando qualche tour?
Certamente vorremmo andarci e presentare questa musica alle personoe ed amici qui fuori. Abbiamo suonato in un paio di festival in Norvegia questa estate per provare il nuovo materiale (Bukta Festival in Tromsø e Pstereo Festival in Trondheim). Solamente noi due sul palco, Marì al basso, ed io alla chitarra, voce, una drum machine marcia e delle percussioni. E’ stato fantastico per entrambi, e vogliamo farne di più. Quindi stiamo cercando di arrangiare un piccolo tour in Norvegia e Italia per la prossima primavera. E quando sarà l’ora faremo pure le nazioni nel mezzo 🙂

Where did you find inspiration to write “That Day”?
That day was written in Firenze last winter. Me and Marì had gone to Italy to get a break from the Norwegian cold. I was just playing around with a guitar riff in our apartment, trying to write some music, when Marì came up with: That day! That was the right input to get started, it came to life, and the rest came by itself as it often does when you find the trigger point.
I know also Marì is involved on this composition, how do you organize the work together?
Marì has a gift when it comes to playing with words, and lyrics. That has never been my strong side, I can make music. So when we write our new material it comes out of jamming around with riffs and simple song structures, Marì plays around with words, lines, and rhymes. Then at a point it feels like we have the right title or tematic for the song. The moment when the song gets its personality in a way. From that point it’s more for us to put together the pieces of words and music into a finished song. On top of that, we have a lot of fun gettin’ lost in translation! At home we speak a mixed up English, Italo-Norwegian, and even talking chords in the music we have our own mixed up notation system. Cool to finally learn that a G sounds exactly like a SOL ! You learn as long as you live 🙂
What’s the meaning of this song?
It’s more a feeling than a particular meaning. It’s filled with associations and hints of stories or happenings that will play out differently in each listeners head. It is not a timeline built up story. You get a feeling of something going on, but we can’t tell you what… not yet at least!
What are your future plans after this song? Are you planning to record an album?
We are planning to release more singles and eps in the near future. The next single will be out just after Christmas. We are working on several songs at the moment. That day was a trigger for inspiration, suddenly a new electric landscape came out of this song, and I think we both are curios to see where it will take us. Releasing singles and eps fits perfectly the working mode we are in, so then in the future we will have many different new songs to pick from for a full lenght release. That we really do wish to print on Vinyl.
Are you planning any tour?
Of course we want to go out and present this music for the people and friends out there. We played at a couple of festivals in Norway this summer to try out the new material (Bukta Festival in Tromsø, and Pstereo Festival in Trondheim). Just the two of us on stage, Marì on the bass, and me on guitar, vocal, a rotten drum machine and some percussions. It was a blast for both of us, and we want to do more of that. So we are now trying to put together a small tour in Norway and Italy for next spring. And when we get the time we will do all the countries in between 🙂
And I would really like to thank all the beautiful old Italian Motorpsycho fans and friends that are helping us in trying to put together gigs all around down there! Grazie for the joy and the enthusiasm, we get both hungry and moved by it, and we would love to see all of you very soon in the sun!
