Il 2019 è l’anno del ritorno sulle scene dei Pristine, band norvegese fra gli act più originali del roster Nuclear Blast, capace di proporre un potente e melodico hard rock, in cui è facile intravedere l’amore del quartetto per le sonorità folk/blues americane. Originari di Tromsø, i Pristine sono composti da Heidi Solheim, Espen Elverum Jacobsen (chitarra), Gustav Eidsvik (basso) and Ottar Tøllefsen (batteria) e “Road Back to Ruin”, in uscita il 19 aprile 2019, è il quinto LP di una band che nel corso degli anni ha sviluppato un sound personale unito ad una grinta che ha fatto loro ottenere un ottimo riscontro di pubblico nell’Europa centro-settentrionale.
Fabio Rezzola ha intervistato la cantante Heidi Solheim.
Il 15 aprile Nuclear Blast pubblicherà il vostro quinto album “Road Back to Ruin”: questa è un’importante pietra miliare per una band, e ci sembra che con questo disco vogliate diffondere un messaggio importante in questi tempi strani ed oscuri nei quali viviamo. Puoi parlarci dei temi contenuti nell’album?
Credo che come artisti e musicisti abbiamo il dovere di trasporre in parole e musica le nostre riflessioni sul mondo e sulla vita stessa. Diventa naturale per noi scrivere a proposito delle frustrazioni e della tristezza che proviamo nell’ambito sociale e in particolare per la crescita delle politiche di destra al giorno d’oggi. È diventato ormai uno sviluppo globale, e sta creando tendenze all’odio e distanze fra le persone in un modo che, come abbiamo visto attraverso la storia, non finirà bene. Inoltre, c’è sempre qualcuno che trae beneficio da questa paura e la utilizza per ottenere ancora più potere, perciò questo andamento è altrettanto difficile da invertire.
L’album “Road Back to Ruin” contiene alcune riflessioni sulla nostra visione del mondo, ma riflette altresì anche sulle cose più piccole e personali. L’amore perduto, i cuori spezzati e la ricerca dell’aurora boreale. Abbiamo l’intero spettro della situazione.
Quanto tempo vi è servito per comporre e registrare i nuovi brani? Avete trovato facilmente l’ispirazione per essi, o la loro genesi è stata complicata?
Mi sono occorsi quasi sei mesi per scrivere le canzoni per il nostro album in uscita. In questi ultimi anni mi sono recata nella baita dei miei genitori nella parte più settentrionale della Norvegia per comporre nuova musica. È il posto che cerco quanto ho bisogno di trovare ispirazione, concentrazione e silenzio, e riesce sempre a soddisfare questo mio bisogno. Questa volta non è stato diverso. Alcune canzoni hanno avuto magari bisogno di più tempo di altre, ma in generale è stato davvero un buon processo di scrittura. Mi piace esordire su un foglio bianco ogni volta che inizio a lavorare su un disco, e stavolta ho davvero provato a mettere tempo e impegno su ogni singola idea e abbozzo. E’ stata davvero una sfida per me. Sono una persona abbastanza impaziente e molto critica verso le mie stesse idee, perciò assai spesso getto via delle buone bozze prima di provare a farle funzionare, perciò stavolta ho provato a mettere molto più tempo ed emozione in ogni canzone, anche se queste erano particolari o non esattamente ciò che inizialmente mi aspettavo. Il risultato è un album pieno di contrasti e diversità. Credo ancora che possegga quel tipo di energia propria dei Pristine. E noi mettiamo comunque molta anima e cuore nella musica che scriviamo, è sempre il nostro primo obiettivo.
Abbiamo guardato ed apprezzato sia il nuovo singolo “Sinnerman” sia il suo particolare video in POV, che mostra come possa essere intensa e frenetica anche la vita di un ‘semplice’ tecnico del suono. Chi ha avuto l’idea per questo video?
Quando abbiamo pensato di realizzare un videoclip musicale per il nostro primo singolo avevamo l’intenzione di fare qualcosa di completamente diverso rispetto ai precedenti video “standard” per una band. Il nostro produttore video se n’è uscito con l’idea di realizzare una storia a proposito di un membro dello staff e realizzare il video utilizzando interamente la prospettiva in prima persona. Abbiamo assolutamente amato l’idea! È fuori da ogni schema tradizionale, divertente e piena di energia.
Avete scelto di registrare il trailer del nuovo album a Tromsø, la vostra splendida città di origine. Com’è il rapporto con il vostro Paese? Esso è in qualche modo una fonte d’ispirazione per la vostra musica?
Tromsø e il nord della Norvegia hanno una grande influenza sulla nostra musica. Sono i luoghi dove tutti noi siamo cresciuti e dove la nostra musica “è nata”. Viaggio sempre verso casa quando mi trovo immersa nel processo di scrittura di nuova musica, per ottenere l’ispirazione e la concentrazione di cui ho bisogno. Credo che tutto ciò abbia a che fare con i contrasti e la brutalità, la luce contro l’oscurità, che ci porta il potere creativo di scrivere musica.
Ad esempio, un anno fa mentre stavo lavorando sulle canzoni di “Road Back to Ruin” ho attraversato una fase di blocco della scrittura. È una sensazione terribile, sembra che tu sia completamente bloccato nella tua testa. Avevo dei bei versi pronti e qualche idea sui refrain, ma non riuscivo a combinarci nulla. Perciò, in preda alla frustrazione, indossai alcuni abiti caldi e uscii, guardai il cielo e mi dissi “Caro Dio, fa sì che rimanga ipnotizzata…” e questo è diventato il refrain di “Aurora Skies”. A volte si ha semplicemente il bisogno di entrare in contatto con la solitudine della natura per trovare la propria via del ritorno.
Avete già schedulato molte date per la tournée subito dopo l’uscita dell’album, ma sono principalmente in Germania. Annuncerete presto nuove date europee? Possiamo sperare di vedervi in Italia nei prossimi mesi?
Sì, ci aspetta un intero mese on the road fra Germania ed Austria. Siamo al lavoro per ulteriori date europee più avanti quest’anno, ma non siamo ancora in grado di annunciarle. Speriamo che ci saranno ancor più date in Italia prossimamente! Ci piacerebbe molto tornare!
Domanda NonSense: Quale vino scegliereste per brindare alla prima data in Italia del tour 2019?
Dunque, visto che non ho una particolare conoscenza del vino, ti direi che opteremmo per il meno famoso “Brennevin” del nostro villaggio di origine. Altrimenti detto “vino che brucia”, nella sua traduzione letterale. Ci troviamo al chiaro di luna della Norvegia settentrionale. Vi annunceremmo le date del tour in puro stile viching0, in altre parole 🙂

English Interview
On April, 19th, Nuclear Blast is going to release your fifth album “Road Back to Ruin”: this is an important milestone for a band, and it seems to us that with this record you want to spread an important message in the strange, dark times we live in. Could you tell us something about the themes contained in the album?
I think as artists and musicians have a duty to put our reflections of the world and life itself into words and music. And it becomes natural for us to write about the frustrations and sadness we feel in social circumstances and the growing of the right wing politics in particular today. It has become a global development, and it is creating tendencies of hate and distances between people in a way that we have seen throughout history not will end good. And there are always someone who benefits from this fear and uses it to gain even more power, so the trend is hard to turn as well.
The album “Road Back To Ruin” contains some reflections of our view of the world, but it also reflects on the smaller and more personal things. Lost love, broken hearts and the search for northern light. We got the whole spectre.
How long did it took you to compose and record the new songs? Did you easily find the inspiration for them, or was their delivery complicated?
I used almost 6 months on writing the songs on our up coming album. These last few years I’ve been traveling to my parents cabin in the northern parts of Norway to compose new music. It is the place I seek when I need inspiration, focus and silence and it always fulfils. This time was no different. Some of the songs took longer time than others, but in general it felt like a good writing prosess. I love starting out on a clean sheet whenever I start to work on an album, and this time I really tried to put time and effort into every idea and sketch. Previously it has been a challenge for me. I’m a pretty impatient person who is very critical to my own ideas, so I too often throw away good sketches before I try to make it work. So this time I tried to put a lot of time and emotion into every songs, even if it was peculiar or not what I expected at first. The result is an album full of contrasts and diversity. I still think it has that “Pristine” type of energy in it though. And we still put a lot of heart and soul into the music we write, that’s always our main goal.
We have watched and appreciated both the new single “Sinnerman”, a great single indeed according to us, and its particular POV video, which shows how intense and frantic can be also the life of a “simple” sound technician. Who had the idea for this?
When we thought about making a music video for our first single we wanted to do something completely different than our previous “standard” band videos. Our video producer came up with the idea to make a story around the crew member, and to make the whole video into a POV perspective. We absolutely loved the idea! It is untraditional, funny and has a lot of energy.
You chose to record the trailer for the new album in your hometown Tromsø, a beautiful city I had the luck to visit a few years ago. How’s your relationship with your homeland? Is it in some way an inspiration for your music?
Tromsø and the north of Norway has a big influence on our music. It is where we all grew up and where the music “was born”. I always travel back home when I’m in the prosess of writing new music, to give me the inspiration and focus I need. I think it has something to do with the contrasts and brutality, the light vs. the dark, that brings us the creative power to write music.
For example, about a year ago when I was working on the songs to the album Road Back To Ruin, I had this writing blockage. It’s a terrible feeling, feels like you are stuck in your head. I had a nice verse ready and some idea of the chorus, but I couldn’t get anywhere with it. So in frustration I put on some warmer clothes and went outside, looked up in the sky and immediately said to myself: “Dear God let me be hypnotised..”. And this became the chorus for Aurora Skies. Sometimes you just need to get in touch with the solitude of the nature to find your way back.
You already have scheduled many tour dates after the album’s release, but they are mainly in Germany. Are you going to announce soon new European dates? Can we hope to see you in Italy in the next months?
Yeah, we have a whole moth on the road in Germany and Austria. We are working on more European dates for later this year, but we haven’t anything ready to announce yet. Hopefully there will be a lot more dates is Italy to come! We’d love to come back!
NonSense Question – Which wine would you choose to make a toast for the first Italian date of the 2019 tour?
Since we’re not particularly knowledgeable when it comes to wine, I would say we would go for the lesser famous “Brennevin” from our home village. Or “Burning Wine” (directly translated). It is north Norwegian moonshine. We’d announce the dates in a true viking style, in other words 🙂
