It’s hard to sit still for the dear Håkon Gebhardt. From 23 June you can listen to his new work That day Ep, the fourth of a series of singles, eps e outtakes, that the independent record label Geb Label will publish in the next months, 7 tracks written four-handed with Marì Simoncelli.

Which is the leading thread that binds together the 7 songs on “That Day”?
Qual è il filo conduttore delle sette tracce di “That day”?
What binds together the songs on the Ep is that they all have the Gebhardt touch I would say. It`s not so easy to put words to it, but we can maybe say they are sweet melodies twisted in a Gebhardt way, a bit naive, a bit weird. I think those who know my music from before will be able to recognize it, and those who listen to it for the first time will recognize it from That Day on.
Quello che accomuna le canzoni nell’Ep è che tutte hanno il tocco di Gebhardt. Non è facile da spiegare, ma forse potremmo dire che sono dolci melodie arrangiate alla maniera di Gebhardt, un po’ naife, un po’ strane. Credo che quelli che conoscono la mia musica dal primo momento saranno in grado di riconoscerla, mentre quelli che l’ascoltano per la prima volta lo riconosceranno da “That day”.

This is a project in which me and Marì make music together. In the first place Marì takes care of the lyrics, and I take care of the music. In the studio I play most of the instruments, and Marì gives me a steady foundation with her bass. Then we of course can’t hold ourselves, so she gives input to the music, and I to the lyrics. We discuss arrangements, melodies, beats and so on till the last mixdown. So in the end, the finished result is our musical universe.
Questo è un progetto in cui io e Marì facciamo musica insieme. Innanzitutto Marì si occupa dei testi e io della musica. In studio io suono la maggior parte degli strumenti e Marì mi dà una solida base col suo basso. Poi ovviamente non riusciamo a trattenerci, quindi lei interviene nella musica e io nei testi. Discutiamo gli arrangiamenti, le melodie, i ritmi e così via fino all’ultimo missaggio. Quindi alla fine il risultato è il nostro universo musicale.
As your previous single records, the cover artwork is by Jacopo Letti. How did this collaboration start?
L’artwork di copertina, come per i singoli precedenti, è ad opera di Jacopo Lietti. Com’è nata questa vostra collaborazione?
Jacopo Lietti is a close friend of Marì, so it was her connection with him that made it possible for us to work with him. We both like his work a lot, so we are very happy that he was in for the job, he catches the essence in what we were looking for. His design fits perfectly our musical expression.
Jacopo Lietti è un caro amico di Marì e quindi è stato grazie al loro rapporto che mi è stato possibile lavorare con lui. Sia a me che a Marì piace molto il suo lavoro quindi siamo molto felici che sia entrato a far parte di questo progetto; sa cogliere l’essenza di quello che vogliamo. Il suo stile si fonde perfettamente con la nostra espressione musicale.
You have been part of Motorpsycho for a very long time, composed and played for many artists and in 2000 you came out with your first solo artist project, “Gebhardt plays with himself”, a one man work project. Now you are also busy as a producer with your Das Boot Studio. Have you still got some unrealized dreams in your artistic life?
Hai fatto parte dei Motorpsycho per un lunghissimo periodo, composto e suonato per tanti artisti e nel 2000 è uscito il tuo primo lavoro da solista, “Gebhardt plays with himself”, un progetto one man work. Oggi sei molto impegnato anche nell’attività di produttore presso il tuo Das Boot Studio. A livello artistico hai ancora sogni nel cassetto che vorresti realizzare?
I`ve been lucky to be able to realize a lot of my creative needs during the years, and I`m very happy for that. But when you create music you don`t reach a point where you think that “now I have done what I was supposed to do”, and then you stop. It does not work like that. It´s new ideas in my head the whole time, and I just can`t control that. As soon as I have finished a project or a new recording, I start thinking about the next thing I want to work on or compose. This is what I do, and this is what I want to do. The best music I`ve written has yet to come!
Sono stato molto fortunato nel poter realizzare gran parte dei miei bisogni creativi negli anni e ne sono molto felice. Ma quando fai musica non raggiungi un punto in cui pensi “ora ho fatto tutto quello che dovevo fare” e poi ti fermi. Non funziona così. Ho nuove idee in testa di continuo e non posso controllarle. Appena finisco un progetto o una nuova registrazione comincio subito pensare alla prossima cosa su cui voglio lavorare o comporre. Questo è quello che faccio e che voglio fare. Devo ancora scrivere la mia migliore musica!
About Das Boot Studio: you are moving from Norway to Italy – Florence, to be precise. Why this change?
A proposito del Das Boot Studio, dalla Norvegia ti trasferirai nel nostro Paese, precisamente a Firenze. A cosa è dovuto questo notevole cambiamento?
Since I was touring in Italy in the ´90s I always wanted to come back here to live. Italy was always the best part of the European tours. The food, the warm and enthusiastic people, the way of life down here fits better my temper. Norway is a different world. It`s a place that has been good for me when it comes to work, because it`s not much going on, so I could focus on writing and recording, and then I could go out on tour around Europe, meet people, eat good, get new inputs, before returning to the studio bunker in Trondheim. Since Marì is from Firenze we have spent quite a bit of time here the last three years, and I learned to know the city, and the people.
I feel very at home here, and I think the position and size of the town are perfect.
Già da quando giravo l’Italia negli anni ’90 ho sempre voluto tornare qui per viverci. L’Italia è sempre stata la parte migliore dei tour europei. Il cibo, il calore e l’entusiasmo della gente, il modo di vivere qui è più nelle mie corde. La Norvegia è un mondo diverso. E’ un posto che va bene per me quando devo lavorare perché non c’è molto da fare, così posso concentrarmi sulla scrittura e la registrazione. Poi posso andare in tour per tutta Europa, incontrare gente, mangiare bene, avere nuovi stimoli prima di ritornare nello studio bunker di Trondheim. Siccome Marì è di Firenze abbiamo trascorso molto tempo qui in questi ultimi tre anni e ho imparato a conoscere la città e la gente. Mi sento davvero a casa qui e penso che la posizione e la grandezza della città siano perfette.
What do you think about the Italian music scene? Are there any artists you particularly appreciate?
Cosa pensi della scena musicale italiana? C’è qualche artista che apprezzi particolarmente?
In general I`m not good at following what´s going on in the contemporary music scenes, in Norway as well as in Italy, but I`ve been introduced to a lot of great Italian music through Marì. At the moment CCCP is probably my favorite Italian band, together with the scene connected to them, for example Marlene Kuntz. Then, Fabrizio De André and Lucio Battisti are both artists that hit me by the heart.
Generalmente non sono molto bravo nel seguire cosa succede nella scena musicale contemporanea sia in Norvegia che in Italia, ma grazie a Marì ho conosciuto molta grande musica italiana. Attualmente i CCCP sono probabilmente il mio gruppo italiano preferito insieme alla scena a loro connessa, per esempio i Marlene Kuntz. Poi Fabrizio De Andrè e Lucio Battisti sono artisti che mi arrivano al cuore.
