Hi, what are you looking for?

No New – Vyk Non, la musica viene dall’underground

I Vyk Non son nati l’anno scorso.

Abbiamo molte influenze punk e shoegaze nelle nostre vene.

A quali band vi ispirate?

Avete altri live in programma?

English version:
Hi guys! First question: can you tell me the story of the band? When it started?
Vyk Non began last year. Our vocalist, Charles Potashner, started writing for Vyk Non while he was still in his old band, Dressmaker. He wanted a place to use the songs that didn’t quite suit the style of that band. Since then, we’ve moved forward to writing collaboratively, and now everyone is involved in the writing process.
Our drummer, Kayleigh Cheer, had known Charles for a long time and filled in on drums at a few Dressmaker gigs over the years. She is an incredible musician and a wonderful person, so Charles had been wanting to play in a band with her for a long time. The original plan involved more of a 60s girl group & Motown sound mixed with both 80’s and modern noise and fuzz but we have obviously veered from that path. Our bassist, Dan Ball, was the second addition. Our friends Lily Armstrong and Keira Cullinane introduced him and Charles at the Shacklewell Arms. It took a while for the two of them to jam, but once it happened, everything started falling into place. Villi Koira was the final member to join the band. We met her through sound engineer Sofia Lopes. We almost named the band ‘Sofia,’ but Sofia wasn’t enthusiastic about us taking her name, so we became Vyk Non.

I saw you live twice, your performances are really powerful and noisy, like a shoegaze band but more heavy and punk. Is it correct? Which kind of genre best defines you?
We are happy to let you decide what genre defines us. What you said sounds accurate. We definitely have a lot of punk and shoegaze in our veins.

Which bands are inspiring your songs?
We don’t think about specific songs when we are writing. All music builds on and is experienced in relation to what has come before, and we certainly have inspirations, but thoughts related to other bands rarely are articulated in our writing process. When we are writing, we are looking for sounds and rhythms that are interesting to us. We are looking for sounds the notes that sound wrong in just the right way. And we are seeking to write music where the individual notes on each instrument form conversations.

Do you have any release? Or are you planning an album?
We have one self-release of our early material called “This Is Your Room”. It can be found on iTunes or Amazon or whatever. We’re all much more excited about the music we have to come. We are talking about recording something with Margo Broom. She has done some excellent work in the past and we definitely hoping our new songs will be in her hands. Today we released a live video of a new song called “Toxic Masculinity” that we recorded at Gun Factory. There may be a few more songs from that session/party coming out in the near future.

I saw from your Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/vyk_non/) that you recorded by yourself at home, why did you take this decision? To save money and take it easy without rushing in studio or to record your original sound in the best way as possible?
We did record our first release at home. It is nice because it doesn’t cost money and you can take your time. The hard part is that there is no one telling you when to stop. Home recording can eat up a lot of time. We are looking forward to recording in Margo’s studio, but we will also definitely be recording more at home as well.

Have you some other gigs already planned?
We have a tour of Czech Republic this summer and plenty of local gigs booked at the moment. Our next one is this Wednesday at The Windmill in Brixton. We will also be playing the Shacklewell Arms on April 20th. All the upcoming gigs will eventually be listed on vyknon.com or facebook.com/vyknon.
